Google's annual water use in The Dalles: 104M gallons in 2012, 383.9M in 2023, 434.4M in 2024 — 1.19 million gallons a day. "Google uses a third of the overall water consumed by the city." The city's 2024 Water System Master Plan forecasts residential rates climbing 99% by 2036. This is the source for the number the pump counts to.

Extrapolated down to eight turbines that is 53.3 tons — within 6% of entry 16's figure for eight, from a different site and a different analyst.

From the permitted site-level limits for northern Virginia's backup generators, and assuming actual emissions at 10% of permitted: "backup generators could contribute to approximately 14,000 asthma symptom cases and 13–19 premature deaths each year … an estimated annual public health burden of $220–300 million across the U.S." At the full permitted level, in a prolonged grid outage, $2.2–3.0 billion. Puts the national total for all data centers at more than $20 billion by 2028.

The per-car side of the comparison, and the one judgement call in it. Brake and tire wear alone comes to about 50 g of PM2.5 a year — the basis used here, and what CARB's documentation covers. Adding tailpipe PM2.5 brings the three together to roughly 0.010 g/mile, near 120 g over a 12,000-mile year, which would make the answer about 425,000 cars instead of a million. "Data center noise that has prompted resident complaints ranges from an estimated 40 to 59 decibels … This sound level is typically below the 55 or 60 decibel limit that Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax allow in their ordinances for residential areas. Rather than the volume of the noise, it's data centers' constant noise that some residents consider problematic." Described as a "drone" or "hum", audible indoors as well as out. At least 15 sites — 10% of Virginia's operational data centers — have generated complaints.
